The Fasting experience: Fasting for Weight Loss

The fasting experience can be an unexpected rollercoaster ride for those who aren't prepared for the ups and downs of fasting. Fasting can be a wonderful way to get permanent results with a little effort and wherewithal.
A fast when done properly, leads to everlasting lifestyle changes and can jumpstart a future full of health and vitality. Fasting requires a steadfast determination to change. For first time fasters, it is advisable to begin with short fast lasting no more than 1-3 days and slowly begin doing longer fasts. The first-time faster can start by fasting just one day a week, abstaining from certain foods daily, or by fasting just one meal a day until they are comfortable with the fasting techniques. It is also highly recommended to "pre-fast" before attempting any long term fast by consuming more fruits and vegetables and abstaining from alcohol, sweets, fried foods and red meat for 3 days to two weeks prior to attempting a fast longer than 3 days.
When beginning a fast, be prepared for detox symptoms. Some detox symptoms include: headaches, nausea, backaches, fatigue, restlessness, upset stomach and flu-like symptoms. Detoxification symptoms are an indication your body has entered a fasting state and is trying to alleviate toxins accumulated in the body. Detox symptoms can be eased by resting, drinking plenty of water, enemas, and milk thistle supplements. If one finds detox symptoms too much to endure, a banana or an avocado can provide immediate relief. If possible try to push through the detox in order to obtain the best results, usually after a bout of detox one will experience energy and a sense of refreshment.
The body is equipped to go without food for short amounts of time up to about 40 days. As always, it is advisable to check with a physician before attempting a long fast. There are several different types of fast, of which the main ones are:
1)full fast: abstaining from all food and only drinking water and/or fresh juices 2)partial fast: abstaining from one to two meals per day 3) modified fast: abstaining from certain types of foods for a certain amount of time (meat, sweets, breads, dairy) 4)juice fast: drinking only fresh juices
Before beginning a fast of any type it is wise to set two main goals: how long you plan to fast, and reason for fasting.
